Who would benefit from Physical Therapy?
Any individual regardless of age, who are in need of restoring injured body parts, increasing flexibility, or building strength.
At Synergy PT, we also work to improve posture, which if left uncorrected can cause damaging musculoskeletal conditions due to compensation.
Additionally, we help patients who have undergone surgeries and who are in need of therapy to regain optimal physical functionality.
Physical therapy can also aid in improving movement for fhose who may not have pain, but feel that “something just isn’t moving / feeling right”.
What should I bring with me to my first appointment?
Please bring any records from your previous doctor, a list of your medications, allergies and a list of prior doctors. We also recommend bringing in a list of any questions or concerns you may have. Please make sure that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment so that you can provide us the necessary paperwork and insurance information to put you in our system. To save time, you can also print the Intake Forms located on our forms page, and bring them completed to your appointment.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, nonrestrictive clothing, because oftentimes we will be stretching or exercising. Your clothes should also allow us to evaluate your area of injury, so please dress accordingly.
As for footwear, comfortable, closed-toe shoes, preferably sneakers.
If you have any questions, please contact us prior to your first appointment.
How long does each visit take?
The initial visit is routinely 60 minutes long due to evaluation and discussion of treatment plan.
Follow-up visits are 45 minutes to one hour. Work hardening / conditioning visits can be hours long.
How long will I need physical therapy?
You will need to attend physical therapy sessions until you and your therapist decide that you have reached your desired level of function or that further therapy would not be beneficial. Often therapy will also be monitored by your physician.
When should I start seeing improvement?
Progress is dependent upon the severity of your injury / symptoms, length of time since injury, and your dedication to attending visits regularly and following your home program.
No two people will respond exactly the same way to an injury or rehabilitation from an injury, thus recovery is individualized.
Don’t ever be disappointed that you are not progressing in the same way as your neighbor, friend, or family member.
Be sure to discuss those concerns with your therapist if they ever arise.
Will you keep in contact with my doctor?
We will send your initial evaluation and regular updates to your doctor to keep them informed of your progress.
Will I see the same physical therapist every time?
At Synergy PT, our goal is to have you work with the same therapist each time. However, there may be times when our therapists will work together to enhance your treatment session. We also will make the best effort to keep you with the same therapist while attempting to accommodate your schedule.
Will my insurance pay for therapy?
Most insurances cover physical therapy, however, we will verify your benefits prior to treatment to prevent any surprises.
Do I need a physician’s referral for physical therapy?
Most insurance companies will require that you get a physician’s referral for physical therapy, which you need to bring on your first appointment. Medicare requires the patient to be seen every 30 days by their physician to continue with therapy.
In Virginia, PT’s have Direct Access that allows for evaluation and treatment for 60 days, then we must refer you to your primary care doctor or the appropriate specialist for further evaluation.
